Pastor’s Column: In the middle of change, what is steadfast?

Have you seen the prices of building materials skyrocket? Have you heard about those prices coming down a bit? Just a bit ago I saw a sign on a fast-food place which read: “Our Lobby is Open—Sometimes.”

It is proving difficult to know what we can count on for a simple dinner, a building or remodeling project, or even getting gas. Much of the world around us is tenuous right now. Maybe it always is, but it sure is noticeable right now.

Living through what we have been through these past many months and getting through a surprise or two each day, it really is strange for me to imagine the fullness of Ecclesiastes 1:9 —

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

There it is though, right smack dab in the wisdom literature of the Bible. There is such wisdom in truth. There is such comfort and grace in truth also. There can be, anyway.

There will be struggles. There will be ease. Through it all…and through every last grand and tiny bit of it all…God’s love for YOU is steadfast. The winds may blow and swirl. Politics and temperaments may blow and swirl.

Among much that seems tenuous or trying, the rising and setting of the sun is but one reminder that there are things that are steady and stead-fast and wonder-full.

I invite you to read the whole of Psalm 136. Consider the psalm fully as you remember Jeremiah 29:12-13, “ [This is what the Lord says, …] you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you.”

With these words of God through the prophet in mind, take heart in the steadfast nature of God: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of gods,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the Lord of lords,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who alone does great wonders,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who by understanding made the heavens,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who spread out the earth above the waters,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;…

May God Bless YOU to more fully know the steadfast love God has for you!

In Christ,

Rhodie
